Winter driving tips to avoid car accidents

Winter can be beautiful in the state of New Jersey. Snowfall is quite common here, often making for a wonderland of beautiful white landscapes and stunning scenery. However, winter can also be a very treacherous time for travelers and commuters. Snow and ice covered roadways are a recipe for car accidents. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when driving in wintry conditions.

Before getting on the road, it is very important to clear snow and ice off of one's vehicle -- not only the windshield and windows, but also the hood, truck, roof, lights and mirrors. This is required by law in the state of New Jersey, and drivers who fail to abide can be fined up to $75 for each offense. Even worse, if flying snow or ice causes a crash, drivers could face fines ranging from $200 to $1,000 for each offense.

When roads are snow and ice covered, it is imperative that drivers slow down and keep a safe distance when following another vehicle. The more slippery the road, the more time it will take to stop a vehicle. Safety officials recommend at least eight to ten seconds of space between vehicles. In New Jersey, drivers are also required by law to turn on their headlights when driving in any kind of precipitation.

Roadways in New Jersey can get dangerous very quickly during winter. Unfortunately, not all drivers will exercise caution when traveling in adverse conditions, which often leads to car accidents. Those who suffer injury or loss due to negligence in a crash may want to consider consulting an experienced legal representative. A knowledgeable attorney could help victims and families pursue and obtain much-needed and rightful compensation.
