Slip-and-fall accidents can happen indoors or outdoors

Tens of thousands of people across the United States, including New Jersey, unfortunately lose their lives in falls every year. Many of these instances involve slip-and-fall accidents. However, laws are in place that require business owners and homeowners to maintain safe properties -- both indoors and outdoors -- so as to prevent such accidents from happening.

As a general rule of thumb, all businesses that have staff working on their premises must abide by rigid safety guidelines. Likewise, businesses where the public can be on site must comply with strict safety standards. These standards govern both outside and inside property areas.

For instance, slip-and-fall accidents that occur indoors often stem from wet floors that were not appropriately marked as hazardous areas. An employee could have mopped the floor or failed to clean up a spill and neglected to post relevant signs in the area, for example. Meanwhile, outside, sidewalks and steps have to be cleared of debris, snow and ice that may create hazards for people who walk by. Still, in some instances, property owners may not be deemed liable for property-related accidents if natural disasters or major weather events create safety issues with their properties.

Fortunately, if property owners in New Jersey fail to keep their premises safe and this causes injury-causing slip-and-fall accidents, the injury victims have the right to file premises liability claims against them. Likewise, the loved ones of those who have passed away in these types of accidents may file claims against the allegedly at-fault property owners, seeking the reimbursement of financial damages. An understanding of what facts must be proved will likely be necessary to prevail in these types of civil court cases.
